SEGA Mega Drive Mini 2 Announced

Get ready for Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 worldwide release

SEGA has officially revealed the SEGA Mega Drive Mini 2 with plans for a worldwide release in the works. For those who need a refresher on retro gaming, the Sega Genesis is known as the Mega Drive outside of North America. The Genesis is a 16-bit fourth-generation home video game console manufactured and produced by SEGA.

The original Mega Drive launched in Japan in 1988 with a North American release the year following in 1989. The first SEGA Mega Drive Mini was released in 2019 worldwide and was named the SEGA Genesis Mini here in the States to match the naming conventions. The Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 is set to include 50 pre-installed games from both the SEGA Genesis and SEGA CD library.

For around $75, the Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 will include Sonic CD, Virtua Racing, Silpheed, and more, as well as a new Mega Drive port of Fantasy Zone. The new mini console was announced during a live stream and is scheduled for a October 27 release in Japan, with a worldwide release date to come shortly.

So far, here are all the games currently confirmed for the SEGA Mega Drive Mini 2:

  •     Silpheed (Mega CD)
  •     Shining Force CD (Mega CD)
  •     Sonic CD (Mega CD)
  •     Mansion of Hidden Souls (Mega CD)
  •     Popful Mail (Mega CD)
  •     Virtua Racing (Mega Drive)
  •     Bonanza Bros (Mega Drive)
  •     Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive)
  •     Thunder Force IV (Mega Drive)
  •     Magical Taruruto (Mega Drive)
  •     Fantasy Zone (Mega Drive port)

SEGA is also developing a cosmetic attachment that resembles a miniature version of the Sega CD accessory, called the Genesis / Mega Drive Tower Mini 2. Priced at about $37, the original Mega Drive Mini can be mounted using the included mounting spacer.
