The Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio animated film will come to Netflix this December
First-look images of the Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio animated film were recently revealed at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The stop-motion Netflix adaptation is scheduled to arrive on the streaming platform in December 2022.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, an exclusive teaser for the Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio animated film was also shown at the festival, which teased Geppetto’s first interaction with Pinocchio. “Who goes there?” Gepetto asks as he finds Pinocchio in the attic. “You asked for me to live. I’m your son,” replies the wooden puppet.
Set in the 1930s during Benito Mussolini’s ruling over Italy, Pinocchio’s harsh and mischievous antics are depicted in the new film as he seeks to discover himself and the world. According to the official description from Netflix, del Toro “reinvents Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver.”
In an interview with Vanity Fair, del Toro shares that he sees similarities between Pinocchio and Frankenstein. “They are both about a child that is thrown into the world,” said del Toro. They are both created by a father who then expects them to figure out what’s good, what’s bad, the ethics, the morals, love, life, and essentials, on their own.”
Together with Mark Gustafson, del Toro directs this Netflix adaptation of the Disney classic, which was something he’s been wanting to create for the past fifteen years. The voice cast of the Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio animated film features David Bradley as Geppetto, Gregory Mann as Pinocchio, Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket, Christoph Waltz as Count Volpe, Ron Perlman as Mangiafuoco, and Finn Wolfhard as Candlewick.
