Daniel Arsham CRYSTALIZED SQUIRTLE Sculpture Dropping This Friday

The CRYSTALIZED SQUIRTLE sculpture will be Arsham’s third entry to the series

Gotta sculpt them all—New York-based artist Daniel Arsham will be releasing his CRYSTALIZED SQUIRTLE sculpture this Friday on July 29. After the public releases of the Pikachu and Pikachu sculptures , the Squirtle scupture will become the third installment in the CRYSTALIZED series.

The renowned artist revisits the Pokémon Kanto region with a new sculpture that honors Squirtle, one of the first three characters of the original Pokémon video game on the Nintendo Game Boy. The Daniel Arsham CRYSTALIZED SQUIRTLE sculpture shares the same concept as the CRYSTALIZED CHARMANDER that launched last year.

“Squirtle was one of my favorite Pokémon from the original series and was one of my first works when I received the invitation from Pokémon to work with them,” wrote Arsham via an Instagram post.

The Daniel Arsham CRYSTALIZED SQUIRTLE sculpture will be made out of white resin and cast from a hand sculpted Squirtle that Arsham designed for an exhibition at the NANZUKA contemporary art gallery in Tokyo. In his distinctive “Future Relic” style, Arsham reimagines the water-type starter Pokémon as having been frozen in time and found 1000 years in the future.

The sculpture’s surface features “abrasions” all over which expose crystalline structures beneath it, and stands 30 cm tall while weighing 15.2 pounds (6.9 kg). Only 500 units of the CRYSTALIZED SQUIRTLE have been made, and each include a holographic label that verifies the edition number along with its authenticity.

On July 29, the sculpture will be released on the Daniel Arsham website at 9am PT. Check out more photos below.
