Brooklyn’s Solar Powered Biggie Smalls Interactive Sculpture Unveiled

The Biggie Smalls interactive sculpture has been revealed in New York

In the legendary rapper’s hometown of Brooklyn, New York, the solar powered Biggie Smalls interactive sculpture has set foot on the grounds of the Brooklyn Bridge entrance. Created by artist Sherwin Banfield, the sculpture titled Sky’s The Limit in the county of Kings plays recordings of Biggie’s music recorded under his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alias, The Notorious B.I.G.

Since Biggie’s passing in 1997, his works have continued to make a lasting impact and influence on modern day hip-hop culture and music worldwide. It should come as no surprise that fans continue to showcase his legacy as we near the third decade of the tragic loss, and Banfield has created a masterpiece in this heartfelt tribute.

“The location had a profound impact on the work,” said Sherwin Banfield. “It’s on a hill, and I wanted viewers to ascend towards a regal monument and be welcomed with open arms and two essential human qualities — the voice through a microphone and love via a heart.”

The nine-foot tall solar powered Biggie Smalls interactive sculpture is constructed from resin, stainless steel, and bronze. On each side are solar powered speakers that play some of Biggie’s most popular songs. He’s depicted with a crown, a microphone, and a bright pattern that pays homage to the rapper’s signature Coogi sweaters.

Sky’s The Limit in the county of Kings was manufactured by Bill Makky, who casted the Wall Street Bull, and funded by the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and the Dumbo Improvement District. If you’re near the city, make sure to visit the Biggie Smalls interactive sculpture before the public installation ends next spring.
