Celebrating Día de los Muertos, the Nike Dunk Low Siempre Familia launches mid Feb
In honor of Mexican heritage, the Nike Dunk Low Siempre Familia are the latest Dia de Los Muertos themed sneakers to be released by the Seattle-based footwear company. Scheduled to release on February 17 on SNKRS app, sneaker-heads have another chance to cop Nike’s Mexican holiday themed shoes.
Embracing two types of reptiles, the upper of the Nike Dunk Low Siempre Familia is made of olive green faux iguana skin while the overlays are made of black faux snakeskin. The Nike Swoosh, heeltab, and liner are all in a slate blue color, with exquisite Latin ornamentation on the Swoosh and heeltab. Underneath the Swoosh is a yellow red-eyed lizard located on the lateral heel.
Additionally, the words “Siempre Familia” which translates to “Always Family” can be found printed on the insoles along with a skull emblem. Even the shoebox of the Nike Dunk Low Siempre is decorated in tan and maroon with animal skulls and a collage of Aztec pictograms that spell out “Nike”.
The design of the Siempre Familia Dunks are a nod to the 8th and 9th levels of the Mictlān underworld in Aztec mythology. It is a four-year destination for the dead, a journey that spans across nine levels and is filled with obstacles. Once the dead arrive, the gods of death Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl will aid their souls to eternal rest.
Nike also used a variety of their shoe silhouettes aside from the Siempre Familia dunks to create the Sitempre Familia line including the Air Force 1 Low, Air Jordan 1 Mid, and Air Max 90. They have embraced the culture and even authorized its reproduction with INAH, the National Institute of Anthropology and History to make sure the symbolism was accurate and properly represented.
Retailing at $120, the Nike Dunk Low Siempre Familia will also be available at select retailers in addition to the SNKRS app. Photos are provided below for a closer look.
