New Mark Gonzales Short Film “Mark’s Brain”

In conjunction with Shopify, the Mark Gonzales short film showcases the legendary skateboarder’s creativity

The new Mark Gonzales short film “Mark’s Brain” artistically takes the viewer on a ride inside Mark’s mind, a world filled with skateboarding memories over a span of 30 years. Directed by Bailey Hunter and Daniel Yaro, “Mark’s Brain” traverses through colorful recreations of Gonz’ mental state.

Mark Gonzales is perhaps the most important and instantly recognizable figure in the culture of skateboarding loaded with so many iconic figures all with different styles and personalities. Gonz has been known as the “Father of Street Skating” and is renowned for both his artistic contributions on and off the concrete floor.

To reflect on his experiences, the new Mark Gonzales short film “Mark’s Brain” incorporates footage from skate films such as Video Days with long-time collaborators Spike Jonze and Jason Schwartzman also making appearances while recalling their memories. Take a look at what’s in store inside Mark’s mind in the video below.

“You saw Sonic Youth at Palladium, and gave them a copy of Video Days,” said Jonze. “They loved it and Kim Gordon called me and asked me to shoot skateboarding for their music video called “100%.” And that’s how I got into music videos, from that. The fact that you gave Kim Gordon that video—I wouldn’t have been a music video director or director, had you not given that video to Kim.”

All prized possessions from the new Mark Gonzales short film have generously been offered for auction with a percentage of the revenues going to the Salad Days of Skateboarding, a Los Angeles based nonprofit organization that aids in growing underserved skateboarding communities across the world by providing skateboarding equipment and mentorships.
