The Marathon sci-fi PVP shooter will release in 2025
Bungie has finally revealed their new Marathon sci-fi PVP shooter, their first new IP since Destiny. Announced at the recent PlayStation Showcase, the upcoming game will be a spiritual successor to the company’s trilogy dating back to the 1990s.
“Marathon will find players engaging one another as cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners, exploring a lost colony on the planet of Tau Ceti IV in search of riches, fame, and infamy,” writes Bungie on the PlayStation Blog. Although it won’t be a direct continuation of the first games, the developers promise that there will be many references to the world of the original series.
The world of the Marathon sci-fi PVP Shooter will be organized around “evolving zones” where players battle for loot before their teams are able to extract it themselves. It appears to be set in a science fiction world in the year 2850, with “clone technology” that consists of synthetic bodies and shifting abilities. In the brief teaser clip, players known as “Runners” in the game are seen in an arena with full-body armor and a range of weaponry to dispatch enemies. There won’t be a single-player campaign, unfortunately.
“We have a tremendous amount of respect for the original Marathon games and, from the very start, we’ve wanted to honor that, especially the mythology, story, and themes of the world,” said Marathon game director Christopher Barrett. “The original Marathon games revealed story moments through terminals, all in text. But now we have so many more ways to immerse players in this world, both in and out of game. We’ll be carrying that through in the design of this game.”
In a Bungie blog, Barrett adds that Marathon will include dedicated servers as well as “vigorous anti-cheat measures.” Switching to dedicated servers for Marathon is a huge W.
There’s no confirmed date for the release of the Marathon sci-Fi PVP shooter, but we expect it to launch in mid 2025.
